Winter’s a great excuse to put a lot of clothes on. The weather gets cold, the nights get long, the cosy embrace of a Shetland and a down jacket beckon. There’s plenty to enjoy in dressing for the chill.
Winter dressing is all about making the most of everything. More is more here. A good coat does a lot of hard work, but what goes underneath matters too: a shirt layered under a knit, a scarf thrown on, a splash of colour here and there to lift your mood and liven up some more familiar combinations.
This winter collection brings together the sort of pieces we return to year after year, with enough new texture, pattern and character to keep things interesting. We’ve always liked clothes that do their job well and leave a little room for personal interpretation. A Check Wool Smock, a Raglan Stripe Herringbone Overcoat, a Down Puffer, a Western Shearling Jacket. All have the heft and drama required for the cold weather.
The best winter wardrobes are built from pieces that get better with use, that can be worn in different ways and that feel just as right on an ordinary Tuesday heading to the office as they do when there’s somewhere special and something to celebrate in the evening.
"A winter wardrobe made for hard work, looking good and whatever the weather has in store for us."
A timeless icon of the male wardrobe, embodying a louche and easy-wearing sense of style, the double-breasted jacket is a classic. Ours this season is softly tailored in our house cut from a luxurious velvet, with a four-button fastening, a slightly bellied lapel, welted pockets, and our signature soft shoulder ensuring a highly versatile piece.
This season, we return to a number of familiar forms, from traditional workwear to more formal offerings, and a selection of practical and beautiful outerwear.
Our Check Wool Smock combines linen and virgin wool, cut to a relaxed, hip-length silhouette with corozo button fastenings and two front pockets. A practical layer with its roots in life by the water, it works just as well inland. The Raglan Stripe Herringbone Overcoat takes a similarly straightforward approach, made in Italy from substantial 18.8oz wool. Its unstructured construction, soft raglan shoulders and roomy pockets make it an easy coat to wear over tailoring or knitwear.
For colder days, our Down Puffer draws on the proportions and details of 1960s and 70s mountaineering clothing. Made in Como from a cotton-nylon fabric, it is filled with down and horizontally quilted, with a stand collar, angled pockets, elasticated cuffs and hem, and a two-way zip. In red it brings a welcome note of colour to winter dressing. The sleeveless version, offered in navy and olive, retains the same cloth and filling, with a stand collar, snap fastenings and generous pockets. Worn over a shirt or under a coat, it offers warmth without unnecessary bulk.
Elsewhere, the collection moves between the character of traditional tailoring, new iterations of our Games range of suiting, and the everyday appeal of textured knitwear. Games this season come in tonal houndstooth and brown tweed, and bring a familiar sporting reference into a versatile, everyday jacket.
Elsewhere brushed crew-neck knits and a striped cardigan introduce colour and pattern through the colder months. From purple stripes to multicoloured checks and ecru patterns, these are pieces that lend themselves to being worn together, layered as the weather requires.
Straddling the half-world between super sharp and slouchy, our Games blazers are cut with ease to make sure they sit at the more relaxed end of the formal spectrum, and as such are cut slightly shorter and fuller in their silhouette than our traditional tailored jackets.
Our Mk. VII Games Series was developed with woollen fabrics in mind, as such, it is slightly more sartorially-inclined than its kin, and features lined sleeves and slanted pockets on the hip and chest - reminiscent of the Barchetta pocket on our house block.
