A good pair of shoes tends to settle into your life rather naturally. They become shaped as much by where they’ve been as by how they were made, and a little regular care will help ensure they remain reliable companions for years to come.

For the first in our new editorial series, A Life In… we joined Quo Vadis’s chef-proprietor Jeremy Lee for lunch of a martini and a smoked eel sandwich, and let him regale us with stories of a life spent in kitchens, from his mum’s cooking in Dundee, to his favourite cookbooks, and those famous meringues.

We met him in his Chelsea studio to talk about his enduring visual language, his time running Index magazine, and how New York has shaped and been shaped by his work.
