Suede Care Guide

There are few materials that reward wear quite like suede. Soft, supple and rich in character, it has a way of becoming more appealing with time.

It is also more resilient than many give it credit for. While it benefits from a little attention now and then, suede is designed to be worn, not preserved.

Wearing

Suede responds naturally to use, developing subtle variations in tone and texture over time. Small marks and creases are part of the material's character and should be embraced as such.

Allow garments to rest between wears and avoid overcrowding them in the wardrobe, where the nap can become flattened.

Brushing

The simplest and most effective way to care for suede is with a soft suede brush. Regular brushing helps remove dust and dirt while restoring the nap and maintaining the appearance of the leather.

Always brush gently and, where possible, work in the same direction.

Rain & Stains

Despite its reputation, suede can tolerate the occasional shower. If caught in the rain, simply allow the garment to dry naturally on a hanger at room temperature before lightly brushing the surface once dry.

Avoid direct heat, which can dry out and damage the leather.

For small marks, a suede eraser will often do the trick. More stubborn stains are best left to a specialist leather cleaner.

Storage

Store suede garments on a broad hanger in a cool, dry place with sufficient room around them. Breathable garment bags can provide additional protection during longer periods in storage.

As with all natural materials, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause fading over time.

A Note on Character

Suede is a material that records its experiences rather well. The softened edges, subtle changes in colour and evidence of regular wear are all part of its appeal.
