The Revue, January 2021

With the festive season over, and a rather rainy and downbeat start to the year (to say the least), we return with an assortment that will hopefully add a little light to the lockdown period. This month’s selection returns to summer 2020 to watch a brand-new British wine take shape, presses play on a mix from one of the great artists of our time, and revisits a sharply dressed UK subculture. Jump in.

watch: Tillingham, Service Abnormal

Another choice cut from the brilliant Service Abnormal series, which has been checking in with the British food industry as it navigates the pandemic. Initially focused on London locations, series three heads further afield, landing in East Sussex to uncover the story behind Tillingham. A vineyard, hotel, restaurant, and mixed farm set among 70 acres of woodland, focus is placed on natural and biodynamic wines, with all arms of the enterprise centred around low intervention and sustainability. This extended film follows founder Ben Walgate and his team during the summer of 2020, as they embark on their first harvest.

Photographer Vincent Fournier heads to Brazilian capital Brasilia to document this sprawling modernist hub in all its concrete glory. Founded in 1960, the city is best known for its numerous works by famed architect Oscar Niemeyer who was instrumental in developing this brand new landscape, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fournier comments, “My interest in the city of Brasilia comes from a mixture of fascination and nostalgia for the stories and representations of the Future. Indeed, the Brazilian capital designed by Oscar Niemeyer and built in 4 years in the middle of a desert, embodies the vision of the future of the 60s.”

Featuring 80 works from 2003 onwards, the Carnegie Prize winner and Turner prize nominee is now regarded as one of the most important painters working today, famed for her beautifully constructed fictitious figures as well as her extensive body of short stories and essays. Best known for The Great Wave, an image adorning tea towels and mugs across the land, the lesser-known Ejiri in Suruga Province goes under the spotlight in a clever series of interactive images drawing viewers into the fine detail of the work.

read: Teddy Girls, Ken Russell, Happy Dancer

Shot in 1955, the Teddy Girl photo series from director Ken Russell has been brought together in a new edition from Happy Dancer publishing. Taken around London and originally featured in the Picture Post, Russell captures the post-World War II subculture set against the backdrop of a city still recovering from the raids. Taking Edwardian style as their start point, this striking mode of dress revealed a sharp eye for detail and a desire to rethink tradition, “Russell’s images documenting the ingenuity and complexity of their sartorial choices.”
