A Hong Kong Story

A Postcard from Hong Kong

Happy Valley isn’t Cheltenham. Opened in 1845, a metropolis has been conjured around it, floodlights illuminating horses, jockeys and pilgrims who descend every Wednesday for a chance to bet, cheer or just hang out. Hong Kong’s towering skyline visible from every angle. Old regulars in worn baseball caps hunch over newspapers and press radios close to their ears, pouring over odds. We opt for names that stand out: Strongest Boy and Can’t Go Wong which, it turns, out can go wrong… not that we mind too much.

Drake's in Italy: A Manufacturing Road Trip

Starting out in the ancient city of Venezia, we took a trip to Northern Italy to pay a visit to some of our long-standing factories, artisans and family-run manufacturers. Along the way we dodged a few 'enthusiastic' drivers (it wasn't us, we swear) and visited a generation-spanning maker of superior quality buttons, the family business behind our signature Crosby and Clifford boots (with a bit of time for lunch), and finished off with our friends in Como to inspect some unparalleled silk right by the lake's shores.

Lake Como with Luigi Turconi

The house sits on the shore of Lake Como, deep green water flickering in the late afternoon sunshine. Luigi spends a lot of time out here, gardening or firing up the barbecue if the weather allows it which, in the spring and summer, it often does. There are steps that lead all the way down to the water, snaking through prune and apricot trees. The vintage Riva boat that normally bobs on the mooring is currently out of action, but you can imagine taking it out for a spin at dusk would be quite nice.
