The Revue July 2021

July has arrived and our second strange summer is in full swing. With life slowly returning to something approaching familiar, we bring the Revue back to its early days of around-town suggestions, this month tentatively venturing beyond the UK, a little something for our readers located in some of our favourite cities. Read on.

watch: Inside The Potter’s House, Openhouse Magazine
Once the home and studio of ceramicist Maria Antonia Carrio, the atmospheric Potter’s House in Son Severa, north east Mallorca, prepares to launch its creative residency programme "with the aim of fostering dialogue and a spirit of experimentation." Here, landscape designer Luciano Giubbilei, the rustic home's new owner, takes us on a tour of the property via Openhouse magazine. Still much as Carrio left it, this incredible space is thought to be her ultimate creation.

eat: Folderol, Paris

Knowing full well that wine and ice cream would be instant crowd-pleasers, Jessica Yang and Robert Compagnon of Michelin-starred restaurant La Rigmarole bring the two together under Folderol, a “cellar-glacier” full of your favourite things. Located in the 11 arrondissement, homemade cones hold classic flavours alongside the likes of olive oil and sencha, while wine selections concentrate on small, natural producers - a winning combination.

10 Rue du Grand Prieuré, 75011 Paris, France

read: New York Living Rooms, Dominique Nabokov, Apartamento

Apartamento magazine launches yet another spot-on design volume, re-releasing photographer Dominique Nabokov’s 1998 cult classic, New York Living Rooms. Originally commissioned as a photo essay for The New Yorker, this is the first of an interiors trilogy that saw Nabokov head to Berlin and Paris, Polaroid camera in hand. Here NYC residents including Louise Bourgeois, Allen Ginsberg, Susan Sontag, Norman Mailer and Joan Didion open their doors for a “frank and intimate study” of their living spaces, from minimalist lofts to trinket filled apartments.

product focus: White Seatown Beach Club Print Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt

Whether you make it to the beach or not this summer, our latest graphic tee, a celebration of coastal days out, should fulfil all your souvenir needs. 100% cotton, made in Portugal, this crew neck Hiking T-shirt receives a painterly reverse print and a subtle handwritten chest text - a little something to keep you in the holiday mood.

see: Isamu Noguchi: Ways of Discovery, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

Lucky old Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum hosts an incredible selection of sculpture by the legendary Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi. 90 of Noguchi’s works spanning six decades have been divided into interlocking sculptures, metal origami and his signature stone creations – some of which go on show for the first time in Japan. The real draw for many will be the immersive Akari light sculpture installation, 150 illuminated washi paper wonders, works once beautifully described by Noguchi as “poetic, ephemeral, and tentative.”

8-36 Ueno Koen, Taito-ku, Tokyo

watch: Wong Kar Wai Season, ICA

For those eager to return to the big screen, the ICA hosts a season of classics from legendary filmmaker Wong Kar Wai. His unmistakable style, “broadly characterised by warm and sensual aesthetics, bold soundtracks, and soulful romanticism,” moves across love, crime, martial arts and sci-fi in this hit-packed programme. Highlights include, of course, the striking In the Mood for Love, alongside much-loved classics Days of Being Wild, Happy Together and Chungking Express.
