Drake's Radio, EP.12: Jason Jules, A Black Ivy Special

“This playlist, curated for Drake’s Radio, combines some fantastic jazz tracks along with spoken clips.

Music was an integral part of Black Ivy and the civil rights movement - from Motown to Free jazz to spirituals and folk songs. One of the most enduring styles was soul-jazz.

Young, urban artists like Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, brothers Nat and Cannonball Adderly, Billy Taylor and Bobby Timmons - most of whom were conservatory trained - mixed the sound of black churches in the rural south with new, funky, expressive grooves, providing the perfect soundtrack to the book 'Black Ivy - A Revolt In Style'."
